Koori Kinnections Aboriginal Cultural incursions are tailored to compliment what your students are learning in the classroom. Students will learn about Aboriginal cultures, history, the environment, animals, plants, shelter, tools, weapons, and sustainability through this hands-on learning experience.

Incursions usually begin with an Aboriginal tools and resources handling session. We also offer a number of curriculum linked activities that you can choose from to add to your Koori Kinnections Cultural incursion. The following activities are appropriate for all stages and are delivered at an appropriate age level. Incursions are usually 2 hours in duration.

Traditional Games -The games taught to children are games that have been played in Australia for thousands of years. We explain where the games are from and why they were taught (hunting, listening, and hand-eye coordination skills).

Bushfood Cooking - Students will learn about, taste traditional foods, and cook allergy appropriate recipes. This will require a TAS kitchen. There is an additional charge of $1 per head for ingredients/bush food for cooking and tasting.

Traditional and/or Contemporary Art - Students will discover how and why Aboriginal people traditionally used art, what was used to create artworks, and they will produce their own work of art relating to the subject matter taught on the day.

Traditional and/or Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dance - In this activity students will learn and/or create dances, as well as gain knowledge on how and why Aboriginal dances were performed and created.

Weather and seasons: Learn about local Aboriginal seasons - what grows and/or happens in each in season, why there are more than 4 seasons and more.

You can't ask that! - question and answer session (yarning circle).

Making paper-bark canoes (Nawi) - children will each make (and float) a small paperbark canoe, learning about traditional use of natural resources and transport.

Shelter - In this activity students will learn about traditional shelters from across Australia including the people who used them, the materials, and how they were used. They will also create a small gunya each using traditional materials. (With at least 3 months notice, we can also help your students create a full size gunya!)

Suitable for Years 3-12 only

Weaving - Students will learn how to weave using traditional methods. Options include creation of bracelets, bookmarks, necklaces and/or cord using raffia, feathers and beads. Students will also discover what resources are traditionally used to weave with, and what can be produced using these techniques.

Suitable for Years 5-12 only

Dispossession and The Stolen Generations -This activity will give the students insight into how post-colonial history effected Aboriginal peoples. As this is a very sensitive subject, we teach it with the utmost care and respect and discuss it at an age appropriate and non-political level. Through art and discussion we educate the children on Aboriginal perspectives of invasion, frontier wars, loss of land, reserves and missions
and the stolen generations.
